Sam Simon thinks outside the box. "I don't even see the box," said Simon, chairman and CEO of Atlas Oil Co. "Once you see the box, you're still in the box." In 1985, Simon founded Atlas Oil, now the largest oil distributor in Michigan and one of the largest in the Midwest. The Armenian immigrant worked at his father's Shell gas station in Detroit. "Our customers needed diesel," Simon said. "Shell said, 'No, we can't supply diesel.' But I don't take no for an answer."

Atlas Oil Co., a Taylor, Mich.-based operator of 40 convenience stores and fuel supplier to more than 300 locations across 10 states, acquired five Battle Creek, Mich., area convenience stores earlier this week from R & J Inc. and folded the company into its own retail segment, Crain's Detroit Business reported.
